SEL-3031 Serial Radio Transceiver
The SEL-3031 is a 915 MHz ISM serial data radio that supports point-to-point (P2P) and point-to-multipoint (P2MP) operational modes. In P2P mode the SEL-3031 supports three serial data ports in one radio channel. The ports are completely independent and support a mix of protocols including DNP3, MODBUS®, Mirrored Bits® communications, SEL Fast Message, plain ASCII and more. In P2MP mode, a one-channel master radio communicates with multiple remote radios for SCADA or other data gathering applications. SEL Hop-Sync™ technology optimizes collocated radios applied as multiple point-to-point links or as active repeaters. The SEL-3031 is a low power device using less than 5 W in the wall-mount version allowing it to be incorporated into recloser controls such as the SEL-651R. A standard 1 RU high rack mount version is also available, all backed up by SEL's no-questions-asked, worldwide, ten-year product warranty.
SEL-3031 Serial Radio Transceiver is a reliable and cost effective alternative to fiber optic communication.
Central Hudson Gas & Electric uses the SEL-3031 Serial Radio Transceiver to communicate over difficult terrain between SEL-651R Recloser Controls for an automatic throw-over system.
Dual Radio Operating Modes Provide Flexibility
Gathers SCADA information from remote locations with point-to-multipoint radio operation or rapidly transfers critical control and protection commands with low-latency point-to-point radio operation.
- Three Ports in One Radio Reduce Costs
In point-to-point mode simultaneously communicates with up to three independent ports and protocols. In electric utilities, for example, between distributed generation and the point of common coupling, use one channel for teleprotection, another for the electric utility SCADA, and one for the IPP SCADA. Similarly, in oil and gas operations, control and monitor the remote infrastructure of your facilities, including oil terminals, storage tanks, water intakes and outflows, pipeline terminals, cooling towers, and more. - Low Latency Enables Fast Control
Transfers control commands with a typical 5.5-millisecond latency with SEL Mirrored Bits® communications. - Strong Security Thwarts Attackers
Protects critical data and repels malicious attacks with optional encryption card, using session authentication and strong 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) technology. - Tough Radio Operates in Extreme Conditions
Designed, built, and tested for trouble-free operation in extreme temperature, electromagnetic interference, shock, and vibration conditions. - No Licensing Reduces Delays and Expenses
Operates on the license-free, 915 MHz ISM band for on-time, on-budget projects. - Precise Time Simplifies Analysis
Synchronizes the internal clock to IRIG-B for accurately time-stamped event logs.

- COM 203: SEL Cybersecurity Best Practices for Critical Infrastructure
If modern substation design is implemented poorly and lacks adequate cybersecurity, it can be vulnerable to cyberattack and exploitation. A lack of cybersecurity will eventually lead to decreased power system reliability. Cybersecurity is a key component of enhanced power system reliability and operation.
