- Robust hardware design: no moving parts, no rotating hard drives, no fans, and no vent holes
Improve reliability with the SEL-3351 offering a Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of at least five times that of typical computers with moving parts. System incorporates highly reliable SEL power supplies with demonstrated MTBF of 5,000 years.
- Wide power supply ranges: 24/48 Vdc; 48/125 Vdc or 120 Vac; and 125/250 Vdc or 120/240 Vac
Wide supply ranges, without external inverters, make the SEL-3351 suitable for multiple applications.
- Separate system processor and watchdog microcontroller enhance system performance and availability
An independent watchdog microcontroller complements the Intel® Pentium® M microprocessor, operating at 1.1 GHz. The microcontroller detects and alarms for problems, detects operating system interruptions, and restarts the system processor.
- Conforms to IEEE C37.90 and IEC 60255 Protective Relay Standards and IEEE 1613 Standard for Communications Networks in Substations
Install the SEL-3351 in harsh environments, including 15 kV electrostatic discharge, fast transient, radiated emissions, overcurrent, dielectric strength, and pulse magnetic field disturbances.
- Multiple I/O ports: 4 USB 1.1, dual fiber 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, and up to 16 EIA-232 ports
A choice of I/O ports allows direct connections to various local peripherals and high-speed network interfaces.
- Multiple status, alarm, and activity LEDs
Front-panel displays provide convenient system activity indications and troubleshooting.
- IRIG-B system clock updating, decoding, and generation
The microcontroller decodes an IRIG-B signal from an external IRIG-B source and updates the computer system clock. Optionally synchronize this system clock with a network time server. Additionally, demodulated IRIG-B is generated by the microcontroller from the computer system clock when an external IRIG-B signal is absent.
- Windows® XP Professional operating system provides flexibility and functionality
Standard operating system, along with SEL and third-party software, presents customers with the ability to tailor the computer for specific applications.

Use the standard computing platform to develop an application-specific system for harsh environments in utility substations and commercial, industrial, and government systems.
Utility substation
- Connect a video monitor, keyboard, and mouse to provide a human-machine interface (HMI) for alarm annunciation, local indication, control, and configuration.
- Build reliable, safe Ethernet networks by combining with the tough SEL-2725 Five-Port Ethernet Switch.
- Connect to SEL communications processors in a substation to convert relay data from SEL Fast Messaging or DNP3 protocol to a legacy protocol for a SCADA master. Use data from SEL relays and other devices instead of lower-reliability remote terminal units (RTUs).
- Connect to an RTU to communicate with multiple SCADA masters and local systems using different protocols.
- Expand analog and digital I/O interfaces with the SEL-2411 Programmable Automation Controller to process dc values, sense status of contacts, and control external devices.
- Install the SEL-5040 Power System Report Manager to detect, gather, and summarize relay event reports.
- Communicate with IEC 61850 devices using AX-S4 MMS ("access for MMS"). AX-S4 MMS provides IEC 61850 client and server capabilities, and includes everything needed to interface with any Windows application that uses OPC or DDE interfaces.
- Gather time-tagged events from SEL relays and I/O processors to serve as a station-wide Sequential Events Recorder (SER). Forward data to a system-level computer for system-wide SER reporting.
- Perform automatic control using software logic in the SEL-3351 combined with SELOGIC® control equations in SEL relays, communications processors, and controllers.
- Concentrate data from relays, communications and logic processors, and other devices; forward information to multiple master data users, such as SCADA, EMS, power quality, and equipment maintenance systems.
- Install a complete SEL-7000 Integrated Substation System for control, automation, monitoring, and protection that includes an SEL-3351. Implement the appropriate applications to meet your requirements.
Commercial / Industrial / Government Systems
- Deploy the SEL-3351 in oil, water, gas, chemical, steel, manufacturing, coal mining, logging, and environmental applications as a SCADA interface and rugged HMI for plant/remote locations.
- Use the SEL-3351 in Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, Agriculture, Department Of Energy, security, and military applications that require versatile power supply ranges and conformance to industry standards in harsh environments. Remote sensing, unattended data collection, and emergency response hardware are a few of the applications that require rugged computers.
