SYS 309

Overview

This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of the principles and practices of synchrophasor measurement and application.

Course topics include:

  • Purpose and function of synchrophasor measurements
  • Time-synchronization tools
  • Phasor and frequency measurements
  • Dynamic performance
  • Visualization tools

What You Will Learn

Use SEL Synchrophasor measurement to economically solve real-world problems in operations, planning, and protection.

Course participants will:

  • Apply synchrophasor and precise-time measurement theories and discover their importance to the electric power system.
  • Apply synchrophasor technologies to assist with event analysis, troubleshooting, system performance, and system-level checks.
  • Apply synchrophasor technology to measure voltage and angle stability.
  • Explore the C37.118 standard, communications requirements, and compliance methods.
  • Measure dynamic system performance during steady-state and fault conditions in an open- and closed-looped system using a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS®).
  • Configure synchrophasor components, including phasor measurement units, clocks, communications equipment, data processing devices, and display tools.
  • Retrieve and analyze device data for monitoring purposes, including early warning data, diagnostics, and data logs.
