"We originally chose the SEL-2020 Communications Processor for its flexibility and to eliminate an RFL 9660 Digital Switch. We have installed approximately five of the SEL-2020s and found that they perform the same functions as the digital switch more reliably. In addition, we are using the SEL-2020 as the interface for our SCADA system in conjunction with an RTU performing data accumulation. The RTU serves to facilitate communications with the master control center computer system.
With the use of DNP3 off port 16 of the SEL-2020, we are able to perform all of the control and metering functions using the connected relays and were able to eliminate SCADA transducers and the interposing relays. Although we are currently using the SEL-2020 in just one substation as the SCADA interface, we plan to use more SEL-2020s in future substations along with SEL-351s, SEL-387s, and SEL-501s. There is even the possibility of eliminating the RTU altogether when the new control center computer system is implemented in the future."
