Flexible Universal Platform
Apply a single platform that supports operation as a SONET multiplexer or an Ethernet switch, with seamless operation between the two.
The SEL ICON provides both internode line transport capability and intranode Ethernet connectivity in a single platform:
- OC-48 SONET multiplexer provides high-bandwidth internode communication
- Fast Ethernet switch for local intranode communication, with Gigabit Ethernet support available in a future release
The ICON is designed to provide a migration path from time-division multiplexing (TDM) based networks to IP-based networks, without a complete hardware upgrade. A future release will allow the ICON to operate as a Gigabit Ethernet multiplexer.
Robust Network Architectures and Increased Network Reliability
Maintain critical services by quickly restoring traffic when an infrastructure disruption like fiber failure occurs. The SEL ICON supports single or multiple ring network topologies with single or dual interconnection ties between rings. If a fiber fails in a ring network, traffic switches in less than 5 milliseconds. In addition to ring network topologies, point-to-point and linear configurations are also supported.

Tailor the network management solution to meet your needs with either SEL-5051 Network Management System Software or a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) tool. Features include graphical network representation, remote provisioning, event reporting, performance monitoring, inventory management, and security management.

Isolation of Application Traffic
Separate different traffic types using SONET STS-1 or VT granularity. Ethernet interfaces support IEEE 802.1Q and port-based virtual local-area networks (VLANs).
